HICKMAN® CATHETER CARE AND MANAGEMENT PROCEDURE

TO HICKMAN® CATHETER PATIENT
You now have a semi-permanent central venous catheter. This catheter gives us access to your veins without inserting a needle into your hands or arms. This catheter requires daily care. It must be flushed with Heparin every 24 hours to keep the blood from clotting inside the catheter. The skin around the catheter must be kept clean and a sterile dressing is required over the area where the catheter exits the skin. With care, your HICKMAN® CATHETER will remain free of complications. This care will become as routine as brushing your teeth, but never let it become so routine that you break the rules of sterility.

HICKMAN® CATHETER PROCEDURES
A. Flushing of Catheter
•To be done daily unless otherwise instructed

1.

Assemble supplies
•Pre-filled Heparin syringes, one for each lumen
•Alcohol swabs
  2. Wash hands with soap and water
  3. Pull back gently on syringe plunger to loosen seal, then gently push plunger up until you see a drop of fluid at the top of the syringe
  4. If you see any air in the syringe, tap syringe until air floats to top and gently press plunger until you see a drop of fluid at tip
  5. Swab end of clave cap on HICKMAN® CATHETER with an alcohol swab
  6. Open clamp on catheter; attach syringe
  7. Inject Heparin into catheter
  8. Remove syringe from cap
  9. Close clamp
  10. Repeat for each lumen

  6. Open glove package and put them on; at this point do not touch anything but the items in the kit
  7. Clean an area around the catheter insertion site with alcohol swabstick; always work in a circular motion starting closest to the catheter and working outward
  8. Repeat the above procedure using another alcohol swabstick; cleaning an area about 3" in diameter: Do the same with the 3rd swabstick
  9. Allow alcohol to air dry
  10. Repeat step 7 using the 3 Betadine swabsticks
  11. Cover with transparent dressing; this provides an occlusive dressing and allows the patient to bathe or shower without disturbing the dressing
  12. Loop remaining catheter and tape it securely to the skin with tape to prevent catching on clothes
