PERIPHERAL ACCESS/ADMINISTRATION OF IV MEDICATION PROCEDURE

1. WASH HANDS BEFORE STARTING PROCEDURE. INSPECT SITE FOR REDNESS, SWELLING OR DRAINAGE. IF ANY OF THESE ARE NOTED CALL THE IV NURSE.
2. WIPE CAP WITH ALCOHOL SWAB.
3. FLUSH IV LINE WITH NORMAL SALINE SOLUTION.

4.

WIPE CAP WITH ALCOHOL SWAB AND CONNECT IV TUBING ONTO THE CLAVE CAP.

5.

INFUSE MEDICINE AS INSTRUCTED.
6. WHEN MEDICINE IS COMPLETED, CLAMP AND DISCONNECT THE TUBING FROM THE CAP.
7. WIPE THE CAP WITH ALCOHOL SWAB.
8. FLUSH IV LINE WITH NORMAL SALINE SOLUTION.
9. WIPE CAP WITH ALCOHOL SWAB.
10. FLUSH IV LINE WITH HEPARIN FLUSH SOLUTION.
  CONTACT YOUR IV NURSE IF:
1. YOU NOTICE ANY REDNESS, SWELLING OR DRAINAGE AT THE INSERTION SITE.
2. YOU HAVE ANY DIFFICULTY FLUSHING THE IV LINE.
3. THE MEDICINE WILL NOT INFUSE.
4. YOUR DRESSING BECOMES LOOSE.
5. YOUR IV LINE COMES OUT.
