PICC DRESSING CHANGE AND MANAGEMENT PROCEDURE
A. PICC Dressing Change
- Wash your hands
- Gather your supplies on a clean work area
- Put on mask and non-sterile gloves and give
patient a mask or have him turn away from site
- Remove old dressing carefully peeling the clear plastic
dressing off from the edge closest to the patient's hand
up towards the shoulder (leave sterile strips in place)
- Measure and record the external catheter length
(note catheter migration, defects,
complication); remove non-sterile gloves
- Open sterile dressing kit and drop sterile strips into
sterile field
- Put on sterile gloves
- Cleanse a 4" x 4" area surrounding the PICC
with 3 alcohol swabsticks wiping in a circular motion from
center towards outside
- Cleanse a 4" x 4" area surrounding the PICC
with 3 Betadine swabsticks and allow to dry

PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter)
|
|
A PICC line is placed by
a specially trained registered nurse for I.V. therapy
greater than 5 days and less than 4
months.

| These catheters
are commonly inserted in the large veins available at
the bend of the elbow. This may be done at bedside or
in the home. |

Assess the site and arm
at this time for redness, swelling, edema, drainage, color or
temperature change (record complications promptly) |

Secure catheter hub with
sterile strips leaving the PICC in a question mark shape |
| 12. |
Apply transparent dressing
and secure extra tubing with tape to prevent dislodgement |
| 13. |
Measure and record upper
arm circumference |
B. PICC Management
| 1. |
Assess site daily in maintaining or prior to each medication
dose |
| |
- Note color and temperature of arm and site
- Report pain at site, arm or neck
- Report any changes/complications to Horizon Healthcare
Services nurse
- Take vital signs as ordered, note and report elevated
temperature

| 2. |
When not in use, flush PICC line with 5cc Heparin
every day |
| 3. |
Change dressing once per week |
| 4. |
Change cap and any extensions once per week |
